Water hardness is traditionally defined as the ability of water to hinder soap from lathering effectively. It was later discovered that the primary cause of this issue is the presence of certain ions, particularly calcium and magnesium. Today, water hardness is quantitatively measured by the concentration of these ions in a water sample. Additionally, other ions such as iron, zinc, and manganese also contribute to the overall hardness. Monitoring and controlling water hardness is crucial to prevent scaling and clogging in water pipes.
The HI 3812 test kit measures water hardness in milligrams per liter (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm) of calcium carbonate through an EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic acid) titration method.
